Cheap Bait Recipes

BAIT RECIPES FOR BEGINNERS
When it comes to making your own fishing baits whether it be boilies, pop ups, wafters or even pastes and artificle hook baits made from foam there is no better feeling than catching that first fish on one of your own creations.
On this page I am going to share a few tips and tricks on making various baits along with a few basic recipes that will help get you started on your joureny to become your very own bait maker.

HOOK BAIT PASTE
For this recipe you will need:

  • Your favourite ground bait of choice
  • A tin of Cat meat in jelly preferably fish based like salmon and tuna.
  • A food processor
  • Corn starch (Optional)
First place your cat meat in to your food processor and blend untill smooth you may need a noise peg for this bit. Then once your meat is lump free get your ground bait of choice and add small amounts at a time untill a paste like consistency forms in your food processor. Once the mixture starts to toughen remove from the processor and get your hands stuck in adding ground bait when needed with a little trial and error you will find the perfect ballance. If your finding that your paste is not staying on the hook or is falling apart when making (This is usually down to ground bait brand) this is where the corn starch comes in handy to help bind and thicken. Only use small amounts at a time ie: 1/2 teaspoon. Once finished and your happy place your paste in to a food bag and freeze untill needed and remove from the freezer 24hrs before fishing.

SUPERMARKET BOILIE
In this section we are going to take advantage of all the guddies that a supermarket or wholesaler has to offer. There are a few tips that I can give you when it comes to supermarket ingredients. first off when it comes to supermarket flavouring we all know that the flavours on the bakery section are a bit blah! but not to worry! I have found that the flavourings available in the foreign food section or in your local indian shop are much better and are alot more potent and rich in flavour and trace through the bait really well for a supermarket flavour. Your Local indian shop or wholesaler as I just mentioned is all so an absolute gold mine when it comes to ingredients for bait making, everything from Semolina, Soya flour, Corn flour, Various other flours, milk powders, spices, flavourings and dyes. You can pretty much get all your ingredients from your local indian supermarket or wholesaler.
If your wanting to add a fishmeal side to your supermarket bait this can be quite tricky, but there is a work around! Cat biscuits and dog food can be a great substitute when making your fishy supermarket boilie, just simply check out the ingredients on the back of that package and find the one with most fishmeal or fish derivatives and blend untill course or fine and there you have it. Now you have got all your ingredients and your ready to rock and roll but you want to add a little more texture and crunch to your bait, not a problem! check out the birdfood section and pick your self up some niger seeds and save all your egg shells happy days.
Now your thinking what if i want to make it a little more complex and I want to start adding more complex proteins in to my mixture again not a problem, the best place is to head over to the health food section and check out the superfoods. Many supermarkets these days stock a wide variety of protein powder additives not the stuff for protein shakes but additives like hemp protein powder, rice protein powder, pea protein powder and spirulina which is an excellent ingredient for fishing baits loaded with antioxidants and vitamins not to mention natural green colouring.. You can all so add ingredients like marmite which is made from yeast extract, Tomato puree, Molasses, Honey and Fructose powder to take the bitterness out of your baits.
So there you have it a few little pointers to help you get the best out of your supermarket for that perfect inexpensive supermarket boilie.

SUPERMARKET RECIPES
As a beginner I would start off with small batchs, either rolling them in your hands or on a small hook bait roller..When making these mixtures I would advise mixing all your liquids together first like eggs, flavour and any extras that need diluting in to liquid and add the basemix slowly adding small amounts at a time untill your dough is soft and pliable just past the point of sticky so it no longer clings to your hands. Making your baits this way to start off with will make sure your baits roll every time untill you get used to the quantities needed.
